International Fiscal Association Student Tax Writing Competition

Deadline: October 31, 2008

Description:
The International Fiscal Association (USA Branch) is hosting a tax writing competition open to full or part-time students pursuing a graduate tax degree (J.D., L.L.M., S.J.D, M.S.T., etc.), on a topic involving the application of U.S. tax rules to international activities.  Papers must be no more than 40 pages and must be sponsored by a faculty member. The deadline is October 31, 2008. Papers must be emailed to these Tax Professors:

Daniel T. Murphy Student Writing Competition Announcement

Deadline: December 05, 2008

Description:
The Daniel T. Murphy Student Writing Competition is intended to foster knowledge and scholarly work by students on specific areas of the Law of the WTO.
COMPETITION TOPIC: The WTO Dispute Settlement System.
PRIZE INFORMATION
1st place: $500 cash award and publication in the Richmond Journal of Global Law and Business’s Annual Survey of the Law of the WTO
2nd place: $200 cash award
3rd place: $100 cash award
Submission Procedure
1) All interested students must email RJGLBAnnualSurvey@richmond.edu by Monday, December 1st, 2008 to request an anonymous submission number. Included in this email should be your name, email address, and the name of your law school.
Please place "Anonymous Number Request" in the email subject line.
2) Students must mail two (2) copies of their submission to:

2009 Roscoe Hogan Environmental Essay Contest

Deadline: March 31, 2009

Description:
The Roscoe Hogan Environmental Law Essay Contest is a $5,000 cash award given to the author of the winning essay. The 2009 topic is Pollution Preemption: Federal Preemption of State Tort Law and Environmental Protection. Any student currently enrolled in an accredited American law school may submit a legal essay for the competition. Essays can only be written during the academic year covered by the competition and may not be prepared as part of paid legal work outside of law school. The intent-to-enter submittion deadline is January 30, 2009 and the essay contest deadline is March 31, 2009.

NRA Civil Rights Defense Fund Scholarship Writing Contest

Deadline: June 01, 2009

Description:
The NRA Civil Rights Defense Fund is sponsoring a scholarship writing contest commencing July 1, 2008 and concluding June 1, 2009 for law students. The subject of the contest is "The Right of the Individual to Keep and Bear Arms as a Federally Protected Right." Scholarship prizes will be awarded to First, Second, Third and Fourth place winners in the amounts of $5,000, $3,000, $2,000 and $1,000 respectively.

The contest is open to all individuals who are law students on the date of submission and who have not been previously admitted to practice in the United States. Admission to practice after submission of the paper is not disqualifying.

Papers should be double-spaced, not exceed 30 pages in length, exclusive of endnotes, comply with the Bluebook, and cannot have been previously published.

NRA Civil Rights Defense Fund Third Year Law Student Scholarship Writing Contest

Deadline: June 01, 2009

Description:
Scholarships are being awarded to law students who submit articles on the constitutional right to keep and bear arms. The contest commences July 1, 2008. The article must be received by the Fund on or before June 1, 2008. The prizes are: First Place $12,5000 towards tuition, Second Place $5,000, Third Place $2,500.

The contest is open to all individuals who are law students at the date of submission and who have not been previously admitted to practice law in the United States. Such student shall be in good standing in an accredited law school as a third-year law school student as of Fall 2008.
The paper must be of a quality suitable for publication in a law review or journal and cannot have been previously published.

The 2009 Tannenwald Writing Competition

Deadline: July 01, 2009

Description:
Named for the late Tax Court Judge Theodore Tannenwald, Jr., and designed to perpetuate his dedication to legal scholarship of the highest quality, the Tannenwald Writing Competition is open to all full- or part-time law school students, undergraduate or graduate. Papers on any federal or state tax-related topic may be submitted in accordance with the Competition Rules (viewable at www.tannenwald.org).

Cash prizes of $5,000, $2,5000 and $1,5000 will be awarded for the top three papers.

Papers must be sponsored by a law school professor. The deadline for submitting papers is 9 p.m. July 1, 2009.

Fellowships

ABA Section of Taxation Public Service Fellowship

Deadline: October 15, 2008

Description:
The ABA Section of Taxation announces its new Public Service Fellowship award program, developed to address the need for tax legal service assistance around the country, and to foster an interest in tax-related public service for those lawyers who participate.

The Public Service Fellowships are open to recent J.D. and LL.M. graduates and judicial clerks who commit to working in tax-related public interest, non-profit 501(c)(3) organizations for two years. Applicants must select and arrange employment with those organizations prior to applying for the Fellowship, and must confirm that their work will involve taxation or the administration of tax law. Up to two Fellowships will be awarded each year, and the Section will fund the salary, benefits and law school debt service (when applicable) for each awardee. The Section is now accepting applications for the 2009 Fellowships, with a deadline of October 15, 2008.

The Robert Bosch Foundation Fellowship Program

Deadline: October 15, 2008

Description:
The program offers 20 American professionals an in-depth understanding of the political, economic and cultural environment of Germany and Europe through a nine-month professional development fellowship program. The program provides two high-level work placements in major German institutions, indluding the public and private sectors, three seminars across Europe with key decision-makers, and a generous monthly stipend. Intensive German language training is available as needed in the U.S. and Germany.

US HUD's Office of Legal Counsel Legal Honors Program 2009-2010

Deadline: October 15, 2008

Description:
The United States Department of Housing and Urban Development's Legal Honors Program for graduating law students, graduate law student, and judicial law clerks serves as HUD's only recruitment program for entry-level attorneys. Subject to appropriations, approximately 10-20 one-year legal honor positions are available annually in Headquarters and Field Offices. Successful candidates begin work in August or September and participate in a 14-month appointment that may lead to a permanent position, pending bar admittance. During the program, Legal Honors are assigned mentors, are given the opportunity to rotate to other offices within the Office of General Counsel, and participate in additional training and monthly discussions to enhance their program experience and develop their legal abilities.

AARP Foundation Litigation Herbert Semmel Elder Law Fellowship

Deadline: November 07, 2008

Description:
AARP Foundation Litigation (APL) announces the third annual AARP Foundation Litigation Herbert Semmel Elder Law Fellowship for law students interested in issues affecting older persons. APL, located in Washington DC, addresses legal issues that affect older persons, such as health and long term care, housing, consumer protection including predatory mortgage lending, age and disability discrimination in employment, and pensions and other retiree benefits. Description: The Fellowship will provide a rising third-year law student with a year-long experience at AFL. Over the summer the Semmel Fellow will work closely with AFL attorneys and others on major cases in state and federal courts. Following the 12-week summer clerkship at AFL, the Fellow will prepare a law review article on an elder law issue to be submitted for publication by the end of the academic year. Prior topics were identification requirements for Medicaid and appropriate credit disclosures for older persons. Qualifications: Applicants should be in their second year of law school. They must possess strong analytical, research and verbal skills; an ability to write clearly and effectively; and a commitment to public service. A familiarity with issues affecting older persons is desirable, as is a demonstrable commitment to the field of elder law. Fellowship Specifications: The Semmel Fellow must commit to working in Washington, DC for Summer 2009. The Fellow will be paid at a rate of $22 per hour for 12 weeks. In addition, a $10,000 scholarship stipend will be provided in support of the manuscript preparation. Applications consist of: a letter describing the applicant's career interests and how the applicant believes the Fellowship will advance those interests; a description of the proposed elder law project that the applicant would pursue under the Fellowship; a current resume; a letter of reference from a current academic or employment source; and a law-related writing sample. Applications are due November 7, 2008. Application documents should be combined into one Word or .pdf file and e-mailed to the AARP Office of Academic Affairs at academicaffairs@aarp.org (reference letter can be sent separately).

Humbolt Research Fellowship

Deadline: December 31, 2008

Description:
The Humboldt Research Fellowship offers students an opportunity to carry out long-term research projects in Germany. Students should be under the age of 40 and already hold a doctorate. Applications are accepted throughout the year. The review process takes several months and the selection committee meets three times per year.

Scholarships

Donald W. Banner Diversity Scholarship

Deadline: October 10, 2008

Description:
Banner & Witcoff is proud to offer the Donald W. Banner Diversity Scholarship for law students. This scholarship is part of Banner & Witcoff's commitment to fostering the development of intellectual property lawyers from diverse backgrounds.

Eligibility - Law students who meet the selection criteria and have entered into a JD program at an ABA-accredited law school in the United States are eligible to apply for the Donald W. Banner Diversity Scholarship. Applicants may not be a current or past employee of Banner & Witcoff, or directly related to a current employee of Banner & Witcoff.

Selection Criteria - Scholarship recipients will be selected by the Donald W. Banner Diversity Scholarship review board based on the following criteria:
Academic merit (undergraduate, graduate and law school)
Commitment to the pursuit of a career in IP law
Member of a historically under represented group in IP law (including race, sex, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and disability)
Written communication skills
Oral communication skills determined through an interview of the law student
Leadership qualities and community involvement

Financial Award - Recipients of the Donald W. Banner Diversity Scholarship will receive $5000 payable for the Fall semester of their second or third year of law school.

Recipients of the Donald W. Banner Diversity Scholarship who accept and successfully complete the firm's Summer Associate Program may receive an additional $5,000 payable for a subsequent semester of law school.
