| Offers students the opportunity to represent nonprofit groups engaged in innovative housing, education and community development projects in Hartford and Waterbury. Students work under the supervision of faculty/attorneys at the Connecticut Urban Legal Initiative ('CULI'), located on the Law School campus. The course involves a weekly two hour seminar, regular conferences with CULI attorneys and direct work with clients. Seminars involve theoretical and practical application of various state and federal statutes to actual client matters, off-campus client meetings and guest lecturers. CULI seeks to instill and understanding of urban development dynamics and transactional lawyering skills- equally valuable for students who expect to serve both nonprofit and for profit clients. The semester culminates in a substantial paper describing the student's project, results gained for clients and applicable law. Typical CULI projects have involved (i) organizing nonprofit corporations and filing their applications for recognition under IRS º 501(c)(3); (ii) renovating a block of 19th century buildings in south Hartford, and (iii) serving as counsel to a community group in crisis, providing a wide range of advice on contract, real estate, corporate structure and other legal issues. | |||||||
