Student Employment: Notice regarding Student Responsibilities
The School of Law offers a variety of paid and unpaid opportunities for students to participate in the work of the School. Students work in a variety of roles, including those of research assistant, teaching assistant, computer technician, library assistant, office assistant and program assistant.
Prior to beginning work in any paid position at the School of Law, students must complete the employment authorization process with the Student Employment Office. The School of Law expressly prohibits any student from working in any position where there is an expectation of compensation prior to completing all legal and institutional requirements related to accepting employment. Students must receive written notice from the Law School Student Employment Office authorizing paid employment for each on-campus opportunity PRIOR to performing any work in each respective position. Authorization to work in one on-campus role does not constitute authorization to work in subsequent or concurrent on-campus jobs.
This communication serves as formal notice prohibiting any student from working under the supervision or direction of an employee of the School of Law prior to the studentŐs completing the employment authorization process with and receiving written notification from the Law School Student Employment Office. Students may work as uncompensated VOLUNTEERS prior to completing the employment authorization process and that is the only role in which they may work prior to completion of all required paperwork.
Law faculty and staff outside of the Law School Student Employment Office have no authority to hire, employ or make promises of employment to students. Law faculty and staff select students for potential employment under their supervision and refer students to the Law School Student Employment Office where all hiring of students occurs.
A separate employment authorization is needed for each and every job on campus. Authorization to work in one on-campus role does not constitute authorization to work in subsequent or concurrent on-campus jobs.
The Law School Student Employment Office is located on the main floor of the Law Library, to the right of the Circulation Desk. The office is generally open Mondays through Fridays, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Staff in the Law School Student Employment Office may be reached by telephone, at (860) 570-5109, via email, or in person, during office hours.
